Responding to an income mismatch notice as a gig worker

A mismatch needs a comparison of reported amounts, platform records, and the filed return.

Start with your situation

Locate the specific payer and year mentioned. Mark whether the difference may concern fees, duplicate reporting, refunds, or another issue, then support the explanation with the actual statements.

Read the request before the amount

An IRS envelope can concern a balance, a correction, a missing document, or identity verification. Find the notice number, tax period, requested action, and response date. Compare it with your own return and payment records. A letter asking for information is not automatically a finding that every figure is correct.

Make a four-column response sheet

Write down what the agency says, what your records show, the evidence supporting your position, and the action required. Mark unanswered questions instead of guessing. Follow the letter's response instructions and keep a complete copy of anything sent, including delivery evidence. A consultation does not replace a response due to the agency.

  • Save every page and enclosure
  • Record the notice number and response date
  • Match the tax year to your records

Questions to consider

Should I ignore a letter if I disagree?

No. Follow its dispute instructions and response date. An unsupported assumption that the letter is wrong can leave the issue unresolved.
